In the News: Decrease in homelessness
Building Futures is proud to be an important part of this positive trend. Every day we are on the job, helping individuals and families build safe and stable futures. Last year we housed 541 individuals and provided 26,136 nights of shelter in Alameda County (FY 24–25).
For 38 years Building Futures has shown up—day to day, person to person, in community, together. We advocate for and work with our neighbors in need by providing tailored services and ultimately housing—because everyone deserves a safe place to call home.
“There were 181,934 homeless Californians counted last year—a 2.8% decrease from 2024, according to the new federal report. Overall, the country saw a 3.3% drop in homelessness, marking the first decrease since 2016. Nationwide, an estimated 745,652 people are homeless.” —CalMatters
“The number of unsheltered residents decreased by 18 percent from prior levels in Alameda County, with overall homelessness dropping by 13%. In 2019, only 21 percent of those counted were in shelter, while this year 37 percent were in shelter–the highest proportion seen since 2015.” —Alameda County Health

“The homeless population dropped in San Leandro by 8.3%. San Leandro officials pointed out the Lewelling Interim Housing and Drop-in Center that opened in March 2025 as key reasons for the homelessness decline.” —KTVU News
“‘So much of the progress reflected in the 2025 (point-in-time) count is due to targeted housing and service resources that were available in 2024 to rehouse people… Unfortunately, the Trump Administration has largely deprioritized these tools and worked to dismantle the very systems that drove these reductions.’”
